Dr. Frances Colón was selected to participate in the prestigious Presidential Leadership Scholars Program, class of 2022. This first-of-its-kind program offers an excellent opportunity to join a diverse network of leaders, hone participants' skills, and introduce them to new ideas and ways of thinking. Scholars are guided through the exploration of principles that will help them address the needs of today's society.
In addition to her participation in the Presidential Leadership Scholars program, Frances Colón has been recognized as a leading figure in Puerto Rican music. She stands out as the first woman and first Puerto Rican national to be selected as principal oboist of the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, as well as being the first oboist to commission works by Puerto Rican composers for oboe and orchestra. She is also the pioneer in establishing a non-profit foundation to promote the teaching of the oboe on the island. Her contribution to Puerto Rican music is also reflected in her teaching, where she developed a new generation of Puerto Rican oboists through her professorship, which she held for more than a decade at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, and her innovative Oboe Mobile Foundation project.
Through his innovative Oboe Mobile Foundation project, Oboe Mobile in the Community, he has been able to bring pedagogical resources to those places where there were no oboe teachers. With the Oboe Bank program, the Foundation has been able to provide talented young people of limited resources with instruments to continue learning this instrument. Her creativity has led her to create an amazing program for children and families, called Kinder Oboe. This is a creative journey into the enchanting world of the oboe with fun activities, games and unique experiences.
Frances Colón studied at the Escuela Libre de Música de San Juan, the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, the University of Central Florida, Eastman School of Music and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
These are just a few examples of Dr. Frances Colón's many accomplishments in music and education, which make her a leader both in her community and on the international stage.
